ALCOHOLIC AIR PILOTS ... 02.11.2018.
It is reported (TNIE, 02.11.2018) that a co-pilot of Japan Airlines cleared a 'breath test for alcohol' but found to be having 'excessive alcohol' in the body when tested again on being suspected by the driver of the airport bus while taking him to the aircraft !!! My comment on this subject was published 45 years ago (1973) in THE HINDU (photocopy attached). The air safety regulatory protocols seem still to be defective. There have been an alarming number of accidents not commensurate with the tremendous advancements in technology -- the latest being that of last week's tragic crash of Lion Air JT 610 in which all the 189 are feared to have been dead near Jakarta, Indonesia ... that's a brand new Boeing 737-Max 8 with pilots having 5 to 6 thousands of flight hours. What is the value of the assurance of complying with EU & US FAA regulators ?
Postscript: Just within 10 days of the above incident of the Japan Airlines co-pilot (11.11.2018), the pilot who was to fly the Air India's aircraft from New Delhi to London was grounded for failing in the pre-flight alcohol test. This pilot happens to be the Director of Operations of the airline, and he was suspended in 2017 for 3 months for skipping the breath analyser test before a flight.

'THE DEVOTIONAL SPARROW !!! ... Oct 17, 2018
When our staff member Suresh brought it to my notice that for the past 10 days one 'Kuttikiruvi' (sparrow bird) has been sitting almost continuously on the leaf stalk of a plant in front of a graphical depiction of 'Vinayagar' god crafted on a granite slab at the entrance of our hospital (see the photos), I went out and took a photo of the bird. It didn't fly away even when we went close to it as though it was waiting to be photographed ! We bought this 'Vinayagar' piece with a facility for water to continuously trickle down its surface more for its artistic and aesthetic appeal.
The 'Indian House Sparrow' (Passer domesticus indicus) is rarely seen far away from human habitat. Like dogs, the sparrows like to be in the company of people. But the little lovely sparrow has been disappearing from the towns and cities due to lack of safe nesting sites in the concrete jungles. As nesting facility is the key for getting back sparrows, 'Nest Boxes' were distributed on the WORLD SPARROW DAY (March 20).
In our schooldays, it was a regular sight to see sparrows pecking at their image from in front of wall mirrors in our homes. Nowadays, we don't see them in our houses. Until January 5, 2012 (when the window of my chamber was replaced by a wall), birds used to peck at the window glass shutters of my chamber. Their nests used to be in the hanging pots dangling just outside the window. Beyond the window was an exotic piece of garden. And what is a garden without birds ? Birds add life to the garden, and by extension, our life. And what is a living place without a garden ?

IS THIS SCIENTIFIC ?

There is an unsavoury news today (The Hindu, July 6, 2017). It is reported that there is an alarming increase in unnecessary surgical deliveries (Caesarian / C-section) in Telengana -- 74% of the total births, almost the exact reverse of the WHO norm of 15% -- Centre for Economic and Social Studies and UNICEF. And, the data of the survey revealed that 15 private hospitals did all the deliveries by 'Caesarian' -- 100% ! It is well known that needless surgery is a needless risk.

Doctors say that they do more as they want to minimise risk to the mother and infant, and that the patients insist to have it that way to avoid labour pain and / or to have the birth at an auspicious time.

Critics say that it is due to the growing black sheep population in the medical profession who are profit-driven.

What do you say ???

[5:02 PM, 9/5/2018] Dr T Rama Prasad: TEACHERS  DAY  ...  September 5, 2018

Whatever be the changes in the systems of education, the role of teachers is of paramount importance in moulding the minds of children. As Henry Brooks Adams said: "A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops." The influence is lifelong and the teachers take 'humanity to divinity' -- 'GURUR GURUTAMO DHAMAH'. It is well conceptualized in the adage: 'YAVADJIEEVAIT ADHIYATE VIPRAH' (the wise continue to learn throughout life).

Most of us didn't have the fortune of listening to the legendary lectures of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former President and great teacher. Let us celebrate his birth anniversary which is marked as 'TEACHERS  DAY' on September 5 each year, and pay our tributes to all the teachers who deserve the highest place in social hierarchy.

“Education should aim at making healthy minds
And not just making wealthy careers.”

Generally, in India, people shun to discuss sex.  But, today (07.09.18), this subject hit the headlines in media, with the Supreme Court decriminalising homosexuality in a landmark judgment and historic verdict yesterday. You may read more on contemporary sexual trends by clicking on http://drtramaprasad.blogspot.com/2017/06/sex-and-marriage.html  -- yes, I write on varied topics from piano to pornography as the saying goes !

[11:43 PM, 9/8/2018] Dr T Rama Prasad: CALADIUM  plants  ... 08.09.18

Today, I took a video of the CALADIUM plants at our home.  Caladums are native to South America and Central America.  Annual festival of caladiums is held in July in Florida (Lake Placid). They are also known by the names: 'Elephant Ear',  'Ear of Jesus', 'Angel Wings', etc. You can see the gorgeous colours and stunning patterns in the attached video. You may click on http://drtramaprasad.blogspot.com/2017/09/trees-and-plants.html  to see more of the richness of vegetation.  GREENING THE COUNTRY IS THE BEST PREVENTIVE MEDICINE.

[3:26 AM, 9/13/2018] Dr T Rama Prasad: VIGNESH  CHATHURTHI  … 13.09.18

This evening, I shall visit the duo of PEEPAL & NEEM trees and the Vignesh idol underneath them in the ‘sanatorium cum medical college campus’ just as I have been doing over many decades, on the days of Vignesh Chathurthi.  It is common to see peepal (arasa maram) trees on the banks of ponds with idols of Vignesh (Pillayar) underneath these huge trees.  It is well known that trees made their appearance long before the idol worship commenced on this planet.  That is why I mentioned about the trees first and the idol next. To know more about the two trees and the Vignesh idol underneath them which I am going to visit today, click on http://drtramaprasad.blogspot.com/2017/09/perundurai-medical-college-sanatorium.html  (subheading : Trees & Plants – the green gods)
